The storms were expected to strengthen throughout the day, stretching from Michigan to Kansas. Flooding was to remain a concern in the upper Mississippi Valley, and strong winds, large hail and possible tornadoes were expected along the cold front.
Mostly calm conditions were forecast for the Northeast, though severe weather with moderate rainfall and thunderstorms could develop in the afternoon because of a cold front lingering over Maine.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast for the South, while the Gulf states were expected to remain hot and humid.
Colorado and New Mexico also were likely to see scattered showers and thunderstorms. Moderate to heavy rainfall and severe weather was expected to move through Montana and Wyoming.
Partly cloudy skies and hot temperatures with highs surpassing 110 degrees were forecast for the Southwest. The Pacific Northwest and California were likely to remain warm with sunny skies.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 35 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif., to a high of 111 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
