[July 26, 2008]  LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky authorities say two young girls have died after they were struck by a car that fled a traffic stop near the University of Louisville.

CivicPolice spokeswoman Alicia Smiley says the two girls - both believed to be younger than 12 - and their mother were struck by the car Friday evening. The mother was hospitalized with injuries that were not expected to be life-threatening. The family was not immediately identified.

The car was first pulled over by police half a mile away. When the officer approached, the driver sped off and later struck the family.

The car was found abandoned about three blocks away. An unidentified suspect was being questioned Friday night but no charges had been filed.
