Rain also was expected in the middle of the Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley, as well as the Tennessee Valley.
Seasonable showers and thunderstorms were predicted across the Southeast.
New England and much of the East Coast were anticipating cloudy skies and scattered showers. Late afternoon thunderstorms were likely in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Clear skies were forecast for most of the Northwest. The Southwest was expecting hot, dry weather.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at Kremmling, Colo., to a high of 115 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
