Forecasters said the greatest tornado threat was expected in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa.
In the West, a Pacific front was forecast to push southeast, ushering in cool, moist air and gusty winds. Light to moderate showers were expected across much of the Intermountain West and Rockies, along with below-normal temperatures. Breezy, cooler conditions were likely along the Pacific Northwest and California coast.
In the East, hot and dry weather was forecast to linger across the southern states under a ridge of high pressure. Parts of the southern Plains were expected to see triple-digit temperatures, while afternoon showers and thunderstorms were possible over the Florida Panhandle.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Bryce Canyon, Utah, to a high of 111 degrees at Wink, Texas.
