The Storm Prediction Center said there was a moderate chance of severe weather in the nation's heartland and a slight chance of severe weather in the Great Lakes region.
The storm was also expected to draw cool air in the northern Rockies. Rain was forecast across much of the Rockies, though high elevations were likely to receive late-season snow.
Meanwhile, scattered showers were expected in New England, and a Pacific front was forecast to slam into the Northwest, bringing rain to Washington and Oregon.
Temperatures in the 80s and 90s were anticipated for a wide swath of the country, from the southern Plains through the Southeast and northward into the Ohio Valley. The Northeast was expected to rise into the 70s, while the Northwest was to see temperatures in the 60s and 70s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of 31 degrees at Pahaska, Wyo., to a high of 112 degrees at Wink, Texas.
