The severe weather was to sweep across the Plains, mid-Mississippi Valley and Midwest, likely containing damaging wind gusts, some moderately sized hail and possibly a few tornadoes.
Thunderstorms also were forecast in the Northeast as a warm front continues to surge north into Maine. The storms there could pack some damaging winds, but they'll also bring some brief relief from the heat wave expected to continue to grip the region.
Highs throughout the East will approach the triple digits on Monday as high pressure along the Atlantic coast provides southerly winds and clear skies stoking the region's inferno-like temperatures. Excessive heat warnings remain in place from the Carolinas through southern New England for temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s and heat indexes reaching well into the triple digits.
The Southwest also was to see continued hot temperatures as high pressure builds in the eastern Pacific and over the interior West. Temperatures will remain cool in the Northwest as the jet stream dips south over the region, which, combined with a storm system approaching the Canadian coast, will allow cold Pacific air and cloud cover to spill into the region.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of 21 degrees at Copper Mountain, Colo., to a high of 106 degrees at Wink, Texas.
