Patchy clouds and pleasant conditions in the South were expected to give way to afternoon showers and thunderstorms and hot, humid conditions, with highs in some areas reaching into the 90s.
The Plains could see thunderstorms packing strong winds, hail and moderate rainfall when a warm front passes through the region. The strongest storms were expected midday in Kansas and could move into Iowa by late Tuesday. Warm weather was likely to continue throughout the Plains.
The Pacific Northwest could see scattered showers if a low pressure system moves into the region from the Gulf of Alaska. The system may take a more northerly route, causing showers to miss the region, though patchy clouds were expected.
Hot weather and dry conditions were predicted to persist in the Southwest, with temperatures likely to surpass 110 degrees in many areas.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Meacham, Ore., to a high of 109 degrees at Imperial, Calif.
