[June 26, 2008]  (AP)  Severe weather was expected over the Dakotas on Thursday night. Heavy rain, strong winds, large hail and possible tornadoes were forecast to spread into the upper Mississippi Valley.

The Northeast was expected to see scattered showers on Thursday. Moderate to heavy rainfall was forecast for southern New York later in the evening. Temperatures were predicted to drop before warming.

The Southeast was expected to see more scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Conditions were likely to be hot and humid along the Gulf states, with highs approaching 100 degrees.

The Pacific Northwest was expected to see warm weather, clear skies and pleasant conditions. Highs in the 80s were forecast.

In the Southwest, hot and dry conditions were expected to linger, but afternoon thunderstorms were possible at high elevations.

Over California, smoky and hazy conditions were forecast to persist throughout the state.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 107 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
