[March 11, 2008]  (AP)  The storm system that pushed ashore in the northwestern U.S. on Monday night is expected to continue its eastward progress Tuesday, moving through the Intermountain West and far northern California during the day and reaching the Northern Plains at night. Rain and high-elevation snow are anticipated, particularly early in the day.

Western Washington and the Idaho Panhandle can expect precipitation to become heavy at times in the morning, and wind gusts may reach as high as 40 to 50 mph.

To the South, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in portions of the lower Mississippi Valley and in southern Florida on Tuesday.

Looking north, scattered rain and snow showers over the northeastern Mid-Atlantic are expected to end around midday. But light snow showers are expected in the Great Lakes region, spreading into New England on Wednesday.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states ranged from minus 15 degrees at Pellston, Mich., to 84 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
