A frontal system was forecast to bring a mix of ice, snow and rain as it moves through the northern Plains and upper Midwest.
Rain was expected in the Pacific Northwest and northwestern California coasts in the afternoon and was likely to spread inland Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Rainfall expected over the coastal ranges should turn into snow in the higher elevations in the Cascades and parts of the Intermountain West.
Scattered thunderstorms were likely to continue in southern Florida.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 9 degrees at Berlin, N.H., to a high of 89 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
