Rain was also likely across the Southeast and the Appalachians, with a slight risk of severe weather in the lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast.
A storm was expected to blow out of the southern Rockies and into the Plains by the end of the day. But most of its effects were not expected to be felt until Saturday.
The Northeast was expected to rise into the 30s, 40s and 50s, while the Southeast was to see temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The southern Plains
area was to rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest was to see temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of minus 9 degrees at Saranac Lake, N.Y., to a high of 95 degrees at El Centro, Calif.
