There was to be moderate to heavy rain with numerous thunderstorms from the southern Plains northeastward to the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, southern New England and northern
Mid-Atlantic.
Strong to severe thunderstorms were likely to develop across parts of the southern Plains and lower to mid-Mississippi Valley, with a threat of strong tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds.
Snow was forecast for the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes, spreading across southern New England by Tuesday night.
Out West, coastal rain showers and high-elevation snow showers were expected to continue in the Northwest. The precipitation rates were expected to continue into Wednesday and move south, with parts of Northern California seeing light to moderate precipitation.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 9 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 100 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
