Portions of the eastern Great Lakes and southern New England were forecast to receive a mix of ice, snow and rain.
The Mississippi and Ohio valleys and the Appalachians were threatened with strong damaging winds and a tornado or two.
Out West, coastal rain showers and high-elevation snow showers were expected across the Pacific Northwest. Widely scattered precipitation was expected in portions of the Intermountain West and Northern California.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 2 degrees at Berlin, N.H., to a high of 90 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
