[March 21, 2008]  (AP)  A storm was forecast to bring heavy rain and snow from the northern Plains to the Great Lakes on Friday, with snowfall expected to exceed a half-foot in southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa.

While wintry weather was winding down across much of the nation, snow and frigid temperatures were forecast for Maine. Cold air was expected to trickle down the East Coast through the Mid-Atlantic.

Rain and snow in the Northwest was forecast to taper off as a cold front weakens and progresses eastward. While much of the northern half of the nation sees clouds and rain, the southern half was expected to see mostly clear skies and dry weather.

Temperatures in the South were forecast to be warm, with highs reaching into the 70s as far north as the central Plains. Even hotter temperatures were anticipated in the Southwest, where desert highs were expected to rise well into the 90s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 1 degree at Crane Lake, Minn., to a high of 89 degrees at Yuma, Ariz.
