The 11th annual Logan County Relay For Life will take place at
Lincoln Christian College this weekend.
On Saturday, the day begins with a cookout from 11 a.m. until 1
p.m. for survivors and their families or caretakers. If you are a
survivor of cancer, you are invited to attend this free luncheon and
the planners hope that you will participate.
At 1 p.m., the celebration kicks off with a survivors' lap. This
lap will be led by Donna Miles and Marcia Dowling, honorary
co-chairs. They were selected by a committee for their outstanding
involvement with Relay For Life. Both are survivors.
Donna's team, known as the Boomerangs, has collected more than
$41,000 to date. The team name was selected because they are
committed to keep coming back, like a boomerang, until a cure for
cancer has been found. Marcia is a registered nurse employed with
the Logan County Health Department. She lectures and provides
information on the importance of early detection as well as
prevention. She attributes early detection as the reason she is
still living today. The Dowling family also is known for the hot-air
balloon ride they so graciously donate each year to the survivors'
drawing.

Team members will continue walking throughout the day to bring
awareness to the purpose of Relay For Life. Highlights will include
a silent auction from 1 to 7 p.m. and a live auction at 3 p.m.
Entertainment will be provided throughout the day, so please drive
out and be a part of this great event. There will be a praise
service at 6:30 p.m., preceded by and followed by some great local
vocalists.
The luminaria ceremony will be at 9 p.m. Luminarias are available
to purchase for $10 each throughout the day in honor of someone
living with cancer or in honor of one who has lost the fight. Names
are read as walkers silently walk amidst the glow of the lit
candles.
The event continues on Sunday with a celebration brunch at
Lincoln College, hosted by Chef Warren, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under. This is
an opportunity for great food and a great time for fellowship. All
proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
The local Relay For Life extends a big thank-you to all who
have made the event possible and says "we are truly blessed to live
in a community who becomes involved and makes events such as this
the success that they have been and will continue to be."
