Severe thunderstorms were anticipated along the coastline of the Southeast, with damaging winds and a few weak tornadoes forecast in a few small areas. Damaging hail was called unlikely, though.
The Gulf Coast was to see heavier rain, but not damaging wind.
Heavy rain was also expected in the Northeast.
In the West, conditions were to be generally dry, but another day of thunderstorms was possible over New Mexico. Temperatures were to remain exceptionally high elsewhere in the West, and the skies were to clear out even more. Highs in California's interior valleys were to hit the triple digits, with Washington and Oregon likely to see highs in the 90s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Thursday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Copper Mountain, Colo., to a high of 109 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
