Thunderstorms in the Southwest were to drop heavy rain in the afternoon, with flash flooding a concern in Arizona and New Mexico.
East of the Rockies, hail and high winds were called likely in the Plains, but fewer storms were forecast than Thursday. Still, tornadoes were possible.
Mississippi and Alabama were to see heavy precipitation, with as much as an inch of rain falling an hour.
The East was to see showers and clouds lingering throughout the day. Temperatures in the Northeast were to remain cool.
Late in the day, showers and thunderstorms were pick up across the Midwest and Tennessee Valley.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Thursday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 100 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
