The worst thunderstorms were anticipated in the afternoon in Illinois and northern Missouri. They were expected to merge into one large cluster later in the evening, with the threat shifting from tornadoes to straight-line winds.
Clear skies and comfortable temperatures were forecast for the Northeast, while the Southeast was expected to reach into the upper 80s. Rising humidity in the Southeast combined with a lingering weak front was likely to spark afternoon thunderstorms.
In the West, more wet weather was forecast across the Northern Rockies and Great Basin. Drier conditions were anticipated in the Southwest and along the Northwest coast, though fog and low clouds were possible west of the Cascades.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 26 degrees at Big Bear City, Calif., to a high of 100 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
