[May 31, 2008]  (AP)  Heavy rain and thunderstorms were expected in the Northeast on Saturday.

There was a chance of severe weather in a large swath of the country, from the Middle Mississippi Valley to the Northeast.

Rain and thunderstorms were expected from Kansas through the Middle Mississippi Valley.

In the West, scattered showers were anticipated in the Intermountain West and Northern Rockies.

Temperatures were expected to be in the 60s, 70s and some 80s in the Northeast; 80s and 90s in the Southeast; 80s, 90s and some 100s in the Southern Plains and Southwest; and 60s and 70s in the Northwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 22 degrees at Big Bear Bellemont, Ariz., to a high of 108 degrees at Wink, Texas.
