[November 06, 2008]  (AP)  Wild weather was forecast for the nation's midsection on Thursday, with blizzard conditions expected in the northern Plains and upper Midwest, and tornadoes possible in the southern Plains.

Three to 7 inches of snow were forecast for the Dakotas, while the upper Midwest was expected to see an inch of rain. The storms were likely to become severe, producing winds gusting up to 60 mph and penny- to nickel-sized hail. Showers were predicted to extend southward into the Mississippi Valley.

Scattered showers were also forecast for New England, while the Southeast was expected to see mostly sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures, with highs in the 80s. The warmth was not likely to last long; a cold front was expected to approach from the Plains.

More wet weather was expected in the Pacific Northwest. Three to 5 inches of snow was forecast for the Cascades, while a mix of rain and snow was expected in the northern Rockies. California was likely to be cool.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of 8 degrees at Copper Mountain, Colo., to a high of 90 degrees at Austin-Bergstrom, Texas.
