[November 24, 2008] (AP) Cold, wintry weather was sweeping across the Midwest and Ohio River Valley early Monday, while much of the West and Plains enjoyed clear skies.

Blustery northwest winds packing rain and snow were to trek across the Great Lakes. Michigan can expect several inches of snow, while northern Illinois and Wisconsin could see wet snow showers but little accumulation.

Portions of northern Ohio and New England should expect cold afternoon temperatures, with heavier showers developing by the late evening.

The nasty conditions were forecast to trigger active weather across the Mississippi Valley, with the strongest storms expected along the Gulf Coast.

High pressure was to remain anchored over the Great Basin region, allowing much of the West to see fair and dry conditions. The Pacific Northwest braced for a storm.

The Great Lakes and Northeast will see temperatures ranging from the 20s to 50s, while the Southeast will rise into the 50s to 80s. The Northwest will reach into the 30s to 50s, while the Southwest will see temperatures in the 60s to 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of minus 9 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 83 degrees at the Marine Corps base in Yuma, Ariz.
