[October 21, 2008]  (AP)  Scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast across the Plains on Tuesday, while rain and possibly snow were expected in the Northeast. The northern Rockies could also see snow.

CivicCold temperatures were predicted in the northern and central Plains, with highs ranging from the 40s to the 60s. The moist, cold conditions could instigate snowfall in the Plains. Showers and thunderstorms, possibly packing hail, were expected to extend into the Southwest, where temperatures were forecast to range from the 70s to the 90s.

The West Coast was expected to remain dry. Northern California was likely to see temperatures in the 60s and 70s, while Southern California was to be in the 80s and 90s.

A cold front moving over New England was expected to trigger rain and possibly snow across the region. Temperatures in the Northeast and the Great Lakes were forecast to be in the 40s and 50s.

More dry, fair conditions were expected in the Southeast, where temperatures were forecast to be in the 70s and 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 15 degrees at Berlin, N.H., to a high of 96 degrees at Williams Gateway Airport, Ariz.
