Police station evacuated after man brings grenade

[April 01, 2009]  HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) -- An explosive found in a dead man's basement led to an Arkansas police station being evacuated.

Officers said a Hot Springs man walked into police headquarters Monday and placed a World War II-era "pineapple" grenade on the front desk. Officers evacuated the headquarters for more than an hour as police worked to safely remove the grenade and destroy it.

Hot Springs Police Chief Bobby Southard told the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record that such finds occasionally happen, though most people simply call the police rather than bring explosives into the police station.
