West of the storm, dry and warming temperatures were expected in the West Coast states through the weekend.
Another storm was expected to produce snow through New England on Saturday before departing for the Canadian Maritimes on Sunday.
The northern portion of the country was to be relatively cool as cold Arctic air pours in.
Temperatures were to be in the 40s and 50s in the Northeast; 60s and 70s in the Southeast; 30s and 40s in the Northern Plains; and 40s and 50s in the Northwest.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 8 degrees at Wahpeton, N.D., to a high of 90 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
