[April 06, 2009]  (AP)  A strengthening storm system was expected to bring mixed precipitation and thunderstorms to the eastern United States on Monday.

Rain and snow showers were expected to extend from the mid-Mississippi Valley to the Northeast as the storm lifted into New England.

The heaviest snow was expected across southeastern Michigan by Monday morning, with 5 to 8 inches accumulating. Areas near the Ohio Valley were to get 2 to 6 inches.

Rain and then snow showers followed by strong gusty winds were expected to sweep through the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

In the West, dry conditions with slightly milder temperatures were to continue Monday. Fair weather was to taper off by late Monday evening along the central California coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of minus 11 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 95 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
