[April 15, 2009]  (AP)  Severe weather in the East was expected to diminish Wednesday, while wintry weather continued in the West.

A cold front was to bring significant precipitation to the Great Basin and central Rockies, with snow at higher elevations and rain below. Isolated thunderstorms, some severe, were possible. Five to 10 inches of snow was expected at lower elevations in the Great Basin, with 1 to 2 feet falling above 7,000 feet altitude. Colorado was to see snow accumulation between 6 to 12 inches, but the northern Rockies were to get less than 5 inches. Temperatures were to drop by 10 to 15 degrees in some areas.

Cool and breezy conditions were forecast for the Pacific Northwest to northern California, with highs in the 50s and winds up to 15 mph. The Southwest was to see winds gusting to 30 mph with highs in the 50s and 60s.

In the East, light and scattered showers were expected to bring less than a half-inch of rain in the Mid-Atlantic states, with highs near 50.

Sunshine and highs in the mid-50s were on tap for the Northeast, and highs in the 70s for the Southeast.

Pleasant weather with plenty of sunshine and warm conditions were expected across the Plains and Mississippi Valley, with northern highs in 60s, and southern highs in the 70s and 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 12 degrees at Mount Washington, N.H., to a high of 91 degrees at Miami, Fla.
