[April 23, 2009]  (AP)  Wet weather was expected Thursday over the Northeastern U.S. from a slow-moving storm system hovering over the region.

Light snowfall was possible at higher elevations and about 1 to 2 inches of rain in Maine. Little to no new rainfall was expected over New York.

HardwareTo the west, warm conditions and light winds were expected over the Plains, extending down the Mississippi Valley, and into the southern Plains and Gulf states.

Record high temperatures in the 80s were expected for the Upper Midwest, while the South was to see increased fire danger with highs reaching into the 90s.

In the West, temperature drops between 10 to 15 degrees were to develop over the northern Rockies and northern Plains, along with scattered showers. Temperatures in the 60s and 70s were to return to California.

The Pacific Northwest was to see mostly cloudy skies and light scattered showers.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 99 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
