[April 28, 2009]  (AP)  Rain and possibly severe storms were expected across the nation's midsection on Tuesday.

An east-moving storm system spanning from the southern Plains to the Great Lakes was expected to bring light to moderate rain showers, with periods heavy localized rainfall, local flooding, hail, thunderstorms and strong winds.

The system was expected to extend from the Northeast to the southern Plains by Tuesday evening. A cooling down of hot temperatures in the Northeast was expected by late evening to early Wednesday morning.

In the Northwest, cool temperatures and showers were expected, with rain showers in lower valleys and the coast and snow in higher elevations.

Heavy snowfall from 8 to 14 inches and strong northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph were on tap for northern Montana. Heavy snowfall was also expected across areas of central and eastern Idaho.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 11 degrees at Yellowstone Lake, Wyo., to a high of 97 degrees at Toms River, N.J.
