[April 30, 2009]  (AP)  A wide-ranging storm system was expected to spread snow showers and possible severe weather across the nation's midsection on Thursday.

Snow showers were expected early across the northern Plains and Great Lakes, turning into rain and isolated thunderstorms while the storm moved to the northeast into Canada.

In the South, moderate to heavy rainfall was to drop across the southern and central Plains, Ohio and Tennessee valleys, and Mid-Atlantic.

Excessive rainfall posed the chance for local flooding in parts of Texas and the lower- and mid-Mississippi Valley. Later in the evening, local flooding was possible in the Ohio and Tennessee valleys.

In the West, colder air was expected across the Intermountain West. California and the Pacific Northwest were to see a brief warming trend through Friday.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 15 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif., to a high of 97 degrees at Pecos, Texas.
