Betty Armstrong is an
octogenarian writer at The Christian Village. She and a half-dozen
others are members of the Christian Village Writer's Club, and all
enjoy writing and sharing at their biweekly meetings.
This winter, after the presidential election, Armstrong did
something that no one else in her writing club thought of doing. For
that matter, neither would most of us.

Betty wrote a poem to
then-new President Barack Obama, wishing him success as president of
the United States. At that time LDN wrote a story about Betty, her
writing and her positive belief that she would hear back from the
president.
Well, two weeks ago, The Christian Village was all abuzz. In the
mail came a letter addressed to Betty and bearing the White House as
the return address.
"The whole place was excited," Betty said. "I was in the dining
room eating, and one of the girls in the office came running in:
'Betty, Betty, I have a surprise for you.'"
Armstrong says she wasn't surprised she heard back and had
expected a reply to take as long as it did. "He is very busy and has
a lot of places to go, so I knew it would be a while," she said.
The staff at the village framed the letter for Betty, and she
currently keeps it in a drawer next to all her writing, which she
says she continues to do at all hours of the day. "When something
comes to me, I start writing, and I just seem to go on and on from
there," she said.

Betty said her writing teacher and activity assistant at the
village, Rebecca Johnson, was on vacation and she couldn't wait for
Johnson to come back so she could show her the letter.
When asked if there had been some skeptics at the village or
perhaps in her writing club doubting she would ever get a reply,
Betty was diplomatic. "Maybe, but they are all my friends so they
kept it to themselves," she said. "One friend here said she was as
certain as I that I would get a letter back from President Obama."
And she did.
