[August 03, 2009]  (AP)  A long cold front along the East Coast was forecast to begin pushing into the Atlantic Ocean on Monday. As this system exits, high pressure was expected to build in behind it, bringing drier and quieter weather activity to the eastern valleys.

HardwareThe tail end of the front was to continue affecting areas of the southern Mid-Atlantic and the Southeastern states. Impulses along the front were forecast to combine with moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico to produce scattered showers and storms across the Southeast, primarily near the coastal areas. Precipitation and thunderstorms in northern Florida were expected to intensify during the afternoon and evening.

Meanwhile, a trough of low pressure and its associated front were expected to move into the Midwest on Monday. Energy from this system was to combine with available moisture and daytime heating to produce clusters of showers and thunderstorms from the upper Great Lakes through the mid-Mississippi Valley. There was a slight risk for severe weather development from the mid- to lower Missouri valleys and the Midwest.

In the North, a second front was to drop down from southern Canada into the northern Plains. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop throughout the region. Cooler air was to fill in behind the front and would yield to lower temperatures Tuesday.

Elsewhere, there was expected to be little change in weather activity across the western half of the nation. A nearly stagnant low pressure system was expected to continue producing areas of morning fog and pockets of drizzle along the West Coast as it remained situated just off the central California coast Tuesday. Meanwhile, warmer temperatures were expected in southern California due to a slight ridge of high pressure.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 34 degrees in Leadville, Colo., to a high of 113 degrees in Phoenix.
