[August 06, 2009] (AP) Active weather was forecast to persist across the Gulf and Mid-Atlantic States on Thursday as a front continued to linger over the region.

A low pressure system spinning over eastern Canada was expected to start pushing eastward and move further away from the eastern U.S., while its associated cold front would remain over the East Coast. This front was to push off the coast of the Northeast, but would extend from the Virginias and across the Southeast, where it would kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. This front has a history of producing severe weather with large hail and strong winds.

North of this system, higher pressure was to build in over the Great Lakes, Midwest and Northeast, which would allow for mild weather with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 70s and 80s.

Meanwhile, a low pressure system developing over the central Rockies was to create a warm front that would stretch over the high and central Plains on Thursday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop along the front were expected, with some storms possibly turning severe.

Meanwhile in the West, a trough of low pressure spinning off the coast of California was forecast to move onshore Thursday afternoon. This was expected to kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Pacific Northwest and northern California, as well as the northern Rockies. The rest of the West Coast would see low morning clouds along the coast, with windy conditions gusting up to 55 mph in some areas of the Southwest; thus, fires would remain a threat over the region.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 38 degrees at Land O' Lakes, Wis., to a high of 113 degrees at Yuma, Ariz.
