[August 07, 2009]  (AP)  Wet weather was forecast to diminish across the eastern U.S. on Friday, while severe weather was expected to pop up over the central U.S.

InsuranceHigh pressure was to build over the East Coast and push the lingering cold front eastward and out of the region and into the Atlantic Ocean. This would pull scattered showers and thunderstorms with it, allowing for mostly sunny skies and mild weather to stretch from the Mississippi River Valley to the Northeast and southward into the Gulf states. The North was expected to reach into the upper 70s and 80s, while the Southeast was to remain in the 90s.

However, a low pressure system spinning over the northern Rockies was expected to pull warm and moist air in from the Gulf, which would create a strong warm front. The warm front was to trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms as it moves northeastward over the Plains and into the upper Midwest. This front has a history of producing strong winds and hail, with periods of heavy rain. The southern Plains would remain hot and sunny with highs in the 90s.

Meanwhile, behind this system, a low pressure system over the Pacific Northwest was forecast to continue pulling moisture in from the Pacific Ocean. This would allow for scattered showers to stretch from the coast, over the Cascades and into the northern Rockies. This system would also bring cool conditions and morning clouds to the coastal regions of California. Hot, dry and breezy conditions were expected to persist over the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 37 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif., to a high of 106 degrees at Phoenix.
