[August 12, 2009]  (AP)  A cold front was forecast to become nearly stationary from the Northeast Coast across the Mid-Atlantic and the Gulf states Wednesday, resulting in continued showers and thunderstorms across the eastern and southern parts of the country.

Forecasters said parts of the southeastern Mid-Atlantic, from the Carolinas to Alabama, might see severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and heavy downpours.

A ridge was to hold firmly from the Southwest to the southern Plains. Daytime temperatures were expected in the 90s and lower 100s for most places. In addition, isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms were possible in the mountains of the Southwest and southern Rockies.

Out West, a trough from southern Gulf of Alaska was expected to continue to swing toward the West Coast and Pacific Northwest, ushering cooler temperatures into the northwestern U.S. and inland portions of northern California. This system, combined with a front extending from the northern Plains to Oregon, was forecast to initiate showers and thunderstorms across the Northwest, especially in the mountains. As the front pushes into the Dakotas Wednesday night, showers and thunderstorms would begin to develop over the northern and central Plains.

Over the coast, the approaching trough was forecast to deepen the marine layer and increase onshore flow. Thus, cool conditions would remain along the California coast and seasonably mild temperatures were expected inland.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 33 degrees at Boulder, Wyo. to a high of 117 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
