[August 24, 2009]  (AP)  Hurricane Bill was forecast to continue tracking northeastward and away from New England on Monday, no longer posing a threat to the U.S.

RestaurantHowever, a frontal boundary was expected to linger over the East Coast, allowing for scattered showers and thunderstorms to persist Monday. The Northeast would see rainfall amounts near a half an inch, with more anticipated in areas of thunderstorm development, while lighter showers would spread down the coast into the Mid-Atlantic states.

Forecasters said Florida may see severe storms due to onshore flow over the peninsula, meaning rainfall totals up to 1 inch over the state were expected.

Behind this system, the central U.S. was forecast to see mild weather Monday as a large area of high pressure hovered over the region. This would allow for warm and sunny conditions from the Plains through the Mississippi River Valley. The upper Midwest was expected to reach into the mid-80s, while the South would see highs in the 90s.

Active weather was anticipated out West and over the Rockies on Monday. A low pressure system was forecast to track eastward through the northern Rockies and kick up scattered showers and thunderstorms over the central and northern Rockies. Forecasters said some of these storms may turn severe due to the high elevations of the mountains aiding in storm development. Flow over the Southwest was expected to continue pulling in moisture from the California coast, allowing for showers and thunderstorms to persist. California and the Pacific Northwest would see seasonable conditions Monday with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 70s and 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 31 degrees at Land O' Lakes, Wis. to a high of 108 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
