[August 27, 2009]  (AP)  The eastern U.S. was forecast to see active weather Thursday as a front lingered over the region.

HardwareA low pressure system would push through eastern Canada and create a frontal boundary as high pressure builds in over the Plains. A stationary front would extend up the Ohio River Valley and into the Northeast, while a cold front would cover the mid- and lower Mississippi valleys, stretching into the southern Plains.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected to pop up along these fronts, with heavier storms remaining in the South and more moisture available from the Gulf of Mexico. This system has a history of producing hail, strong winds and heavy downpours, with over half an inch of rain falling in one hour. The North was expected to reach into the 60s and 70s, while the Southeast would see highs in the 80s, and the southern Plains would vary around 100. Tropical Storm Danny was expected to continue on its northward path, remaining well east of Florida and the southeastern coast on Thursday.

Behind this front, high pressure building over the northern Plains and upper Midwest was forecast to allow for warm and dry conditions on Thursday. Mostly sunny skies were expected with highs approaching 80. At the same time, dry conditions would let overnight lows dip into the upper 40s to lower 50s. Another front was expected to move along the Canadian border, triggering scattered showers in the extreme northern Great Lakes region Thursday evening.

Out West, Tropical Storm Ignacio weakened to a tropical depression offshore of Baja California. It would push moisture over the West Coast, allowing for low morning clouds along the coast. However, a strong ridge of high pressure would allow for warm and sunny conditions by midday. Heat advisories would remain in effect for most of the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at Bodie, Calif., to a high of 115 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
