[August 28, 2009]  (AP)  Unsettled weather was forecast to persist over the eastern U.S., while Tropical Storm Danny would remain well offshore of the East Coast on Friday.

The shores of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic states would see increasingly windy conditions with dangerous surf as the storm approaches.

Meanwhile, a weak low pressure system slowly moving across the center of the country was expected to continue pulling a cold front over the Mississippi River Valley, while also pushing a warm front over Northeast. As this system slowly tracked eastward, another trough at higher levels in the atmosphere was expected to dip in from central Canada and aid in the production of wet weather, while also shoving this slow-moving system along. This storm has a history of producing strong winds and hail, with periods of heavy downpours.

Forecasters expected scattered showers with severe weather to pop up anywhere along this front as ample moisture pours in from the South. Rainfall amounts near a half an inch near the Great Lakes were expected, with more likely in areas of severe storm development. Highs would reach into the 70s in the Northeast, while the upper Midwest would only reach into the upper 60s with cool Canadian air pouring in from the north.

To the South, scattered showers and thunderstorm were expected as a trough of low pressure hovered over the Gulf of Mexico. This was expected to kick up widespread scattered showers that would extend into the Tennessee River Valley and up the Mid-Atlantic states. Humid conditions with highs in the 90s were expected.

To the west, high pressure would build over the Rockies and high Plains on Friday. This would allow for mostly sunny skies and pleasant weather. Farther west, a low pressure system spinning in the Pacific Ocean would push a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and trigger mild showers over the region. A few clouds over California were expected as moisture continued to pour in from the southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Seneca, Ore., to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
