Preparing the Way

Send a link to a friend

[December 04, 2009]   -- For those churches that follow the Christian calendar and follow the steps of the Advent season we usually hear on the second Sunday John the Baptists call to prepare. John again relays the words of the prophet Isaiah:

Prepare for God’s arrival!

Make the road straight and smooth,

   a highway fit for God.

Fill in the valleys,

   level off the hills,

Smooth out the ruts,

   clear out the rocks.

Then God’s bright glory will shine

   and everyone will see it.

Yes. Just as God has said.  Isaiah 40:3-5 (the Message)

We may hear those words every year, but I really wonder how seriously we take our preparation. This year the Mt. Pulaski girls volley ball team again went to state. I’ll admit that I have never been to a volleyball practice conducted by Coach Dulle. However, for the life of me, I can’t picture the coach saying, “Girls we are just going to concentrate on our serves. If we develop some awesome serves the other teams will just stand in awe and victory is assured. We need nothing else.” I am fairly confident that Coach Dulle seeks to prepare the girls for every aspect of the game.

I hope and pray that this Christmas season will be a blessing for you. However, for it to be the best it can be we need do more than string some lights on a tree and buy some presents, even more than sing an occasionally carol.  It will help if we can prepare our hearts by opening them up to the Lord’s presence and by making the road in smooth. That will entail removing some of the clutter and garbage out of the center of that road. I hope you are successful because then “God’s bright glory will shine” and it will indeed be a Merry Christmas.
