[December 08, 2009]  The Zion Lutheran School student council in Lincoln is sponsoring a warm clothing drive. All items will be donated to the Lincoln/Logan Food Pantry for distribution to those in need.

Everyone is invited to participate in gathering new or gently used warm clothing for local families. Suggested items are stocking hats, earmuffs, winter coats, scarves, gloves, mittens, boots, jackets and sweatshirts. Contact the ZLS office at 732-3977 for information.

Pictured with a large box of items ready to be taken to the pantry are Ron McEntire, preschooler Isabella Groves, and student council members Lexie Groves and Elizabeth Ford.

The Atlanta Methodist Church, Second and Race streets, is having their third annual Christmas store on Saturday, Dec. 12. The hours are 9 a.m. till noon. They have new and reconditioned items for children, in very fine condition and all reasonably priced. There is also a "Kids Only" shopping area. They also have a cookie walk that day, so people can buy their holiday cookies, all homemade, of course. A live Christmas tree will be given away and wreaths for sale outside the church by the Doug Usherwood Christmas tree farm from rural Atlanta. All gifts bought will be wrapped at the church for their customers

Harvest of Talents for World Hunger invites the public to a Christmas program and dessert outreach on Friday, Dec. 11. Over 150 Nativities will be on display 45 minutes before the program and an hour after the program. Donations will be accepted for Harvest of Talents for World Hunger. Free tickets are available by calling the church office at 732-7618. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.

Santa at New Holland on Saturday, Dec. 12. Santa will be at the New Holland Firehouse. Children will have their picture taken with Santa and receive a gift bag. The hours are 2-4 p.m.

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! Snow People Art is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 11, at the YMCA from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Register your first- to sixth-grade child for this art class where participants will learn about assemblage and painting with everyday things. What a great gift idea for grandma and grandpa. For more information call 735-3915.

Don't forget the Lincoln Park District Holiday Home Contest. If you have decorated the outside of your home for Christmas, the park district encourages you to enter their contest. You may register at the front office at the park district or register online through www.lincolnparkdistrict.com. Go to the "Contact Us" page, fill out the contact information and be sure to provide your address and a brief description. Your decorations will be judged based on originality, complexity and overall theme. Registrations must be in by 4 p.m. on Dec. 17. The judging will be done by Dec. 18. There is no charge to participate in the contest. The park district plans to publish the winners on their Web site and in local papers as well. This will allow others in the community a "heads-up" on where the best displays are.

Every submission, whether we use it or not, will get your name in the Close Up grab bag. At the end of the month we will draw a name and someone will get $25 just for dropping us an e-mail. If you wish, we will be happy to donate your winnings to the organization of your choice.
