[December 11, 2009]  CHICAGO (AP) -- A Chicago man has been convicted of killing 11 women in a string of attacks that terrorized a south side neighborhood in the 1990s.

Jurors deliberated for about 10 hours over two days before convicting 47-year-old Andre Crawford of murder Thursday.

They'll now be asked to determine whether Crawford should be sent to death row.

Crawford was arrested in 2000 and accused in the series of rapes and killings between 1993 and 1999.

Prosecutors say the victims were prostitutes and drug addicts who agreed to trade sex for narcotics but were instead attacked and then raped as they lay dying.

One woman Crawford is accused of assaulting was left for dead on Thanksgiving night of 1997 but survived. Jurors convicted him of attempted murder in that attack.
