Grace

[December 22, 2009]   --One of my favorite movies is “Dave”, in which a common guy becomes president of the United States. In one scene the president is at a homeless shelter with several children, and all the kids are participating in a program for the president, except for one little boy off to the side. The little boy obviously doesn’t fit in with the rest of the kids. Dave, the president of the United States, goes over to the boy and stoops down to talk to him. The president brings this little boy out of his shell. It is a great scene to see the President of US stooping down to help an abandoned child.

There is a word in the Old Testament that means “to bend, to stoop.” That word is usually translated “grace.” That’s the picture of grace in the Bible: God stooping down to us.

In the movie, Dave, the president, goes back to The White House, while the youngster stays in the shelter. If the movie were to fully reflect God’s grace, the president would pick up the child and take him back to The White House to live with him.

No president is going to do that. But God does. He stoops down to love us, and then picks us up to take us to live with Him for eternity.

No wonder they call it “Amazing Grace.”
