[February 05, 2009]  (AP)  Rain and snow showers spread across California early Thursday, while cold air lingered over the Northeast and triggered freeze warnings in the Southeast.

The rain in California, which will be light to moderate with areas of heavy rainfall possible, will move onshore over the Bay Area early in the morning and spread quickly to the rest of the state as the day progresses.

HardwareThe heaviest of the precipitation will occur over southern California, while a few inches of snow are possible across the mountains.

The precipitation will spread westward into Nevada and parts of Utah and northward into the Northwest. Rain also is anticipated across the Pacific Northwest.

In the Northeast, there is the possibility of a few lingering snow showers from the storm that just moved through, while a couple of inches of lake-effect snow are possible over the Great Lakes region.

High pressure will filter into the Northeast region during the day, providing mostly clear skies. The system also will keep the Southeast clear but cold.

Temperatures both early in the morning and late in the day on Thursday will drop below freezing in the Southeast, resulting in a variety of freeze watches and warnings being issued across the region.

Sunny skies were forecast for the Plains. Conditions across the southern and central Plains will be warm, with temperatures rising into the 60s and possibly the 70s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of minus 32 degrees at Ely, Minn., to a high of 85 degrees at Bakersfield, Calif.
