NYC's Mulchfest: Getting there is half the fun

[January 10, 2009]  NEW YORK (AP) -- How do you haul a Christmas tree across New York City? The New York City Parks Department says this weekend's Christmas tree-recycling program has, in the past, attracted trees as high as 10 feet that were toted by car, towed by bicycles or carried in little red wagons.

InsuranceFirst Deputy Commissioner Liam Kavanaugh says some trees have also traveled by bus and subway to get to "Mulchfest." The department offers wood chippers at selected locations throughout the city.

And if New Yorkers are concerned about leaving a needle trail, Kavanaugh points out: "That's OK. It's biodegradable."

The city recycled some 160,000 Christmas trees last year. Similar programs in cities such as Las Vegas also offer the service.
