[January 13, 2009]  (AP)  Blizzard-like conditions were forecast for the Great Lakes region on Tuesday, with more snow, heavy winds and frigid air expected in the northern Plains and upper Midwest.

Strong winds were projected to drive a winter storm across northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana. Maximum sustained wind speeds were expected to reach up to 35 mph and create periods of blowing and drifting snow. Visibility could be less than a quarter-mile.

More showers were forecast across the Southeast as an area of low pressure moves northward along the East Coast. A mix of rain and snow was expected to develop over parts of the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England as the system creeps into the Northeast by the late evening.

High pressure anchored over the Intermountain West was expected to bring fair weather and above-normal temperatures to the West.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of minus 18 degrees at Presque Isle, Maine, to a high of 89 degrees at Oceanside, Calif.
