Periods of light snow or flurries will continue across most of
central Illinois into this afternoon. The highest snow totals have
occurred roughly along and north of a
Rushville-to-Lincoln-to-Danville line, where 3 to 6 inches
accumulated during the early morning hours. Up to an additional inch
of snow is possible northeast of Interstate 74 and east of I-55.
Northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts of 25 to 40 mph on the
backside of the storm will produce areas of blowing and drifting
snow, especially this afternoon. The visibility may drop to below
one mile at times in outlying areas due to blowing snow. Bitterly
cold temperatures will settle into the region tonight into early
Friday as arctic high pressure builds in. The cold temperatures will
combine with the wind to produce an extended period of wind chills
of 25 below to 30 below zero. Locally colder wind chills are
possible, especially Thursday night.
A winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow means that
visibilities will be limited due to a combination of falling and
blowing snow. Use caution when traveling, especially in open areas.
A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and
strong winds will create dangerously low wind chill values. This
will result in frostbite and lead to hypothermia or death if
precautions are not taken.
