Cops recognize robbery suspect at police station

Send a link to a friend

[January 15, 2009]  MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Call it confidence, or maybe foolishness. A day after allegedly robbing a woman of her purse, a 19-year-old man walked into a Milwaukee police station to inquire about the arrest of his 18-year-old girlfriend for an alleged robbery.

Sgt. Mark Stanmeyer said the man didn't disguise himself when he walked into the station's lobby Tuesday night, so Sgt. Willie Lee recognized him.

Lee and detectives had watched -- about five hours before -- the surveillance video of the purse snatcher outside of a clothing store and reviewed it again after seeing the suspect to make sure it was the same guy.

The suspect is currently on probation for robbery and detectives think he and the woman may be responsible for several other robberies in Milwaukee.
