[January 23, 2009]  (AP)  Wet weather was forecast for the West Coast on Friday, with a winter storm watch issued for northern California and showers expected throughout the Southwest. Quiet weather was anticipated across the rest of the nation.

Heavy snow was predicted for elevations in the Sierra Nevada above 7,000 feet, with 3 to 5 inches expected at lower elevations. Forecasters warned that snow and sleet would cause dangerous road conditions.

Scattered showers were forecast across the Southwest, where accumulations of less than half an inch were predicted. The rain wasn't likely to reach the Northwest, but cloudy skies and cool conditions were expected.

A cold front was forecast to sweep across the southern Plains, bringing temperatures down to seasonable norms. Flurries were possible across northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Temperatures in the East were forecast to be about 10 degrees warmer than Thursday, with New England reaching into the mid-40s and the Mid-Atlantic and Gulf Coast states hitting the 60s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Thursday ranged from a low of minus 7 degrees at Kremmling, Colo., to a high of 87 degrees at Brownwood, Texas.
