Pink locks get Michigan girl locked out of school

[January 24, 2009]  GWINN, Mich. (AP) -- Eleven-year-old Natasha Rzanca has been out of Sawyer Elementary School for more than a week.

HardwareThe fifth-grader from the school in the Upper Peninsula community of Gwinn isn't sick and says she hasn't been suspended. The cause of her absence? She has pink hair.

WLUC-TV reported Natasha said she always wanted pink hair and her mother didn't mind. But she said school administrators' reaction has been less enthusiastic: They told her to leave and return when her care is back to a "normal color."

Superintendent Michael Maino declined to comment about the case but says the guidelines are clear for the elementary school.

Natasha said she has been doing school work at home and will dye her back to brown if it's the only way to return.
