Travel alert: Winter storm making travel hazardous in southern Illinois

Send a link to a friend

[January 27, 2009]  A major winter storm will produce heavy snow in southeast Illinois on Tuesday. Accumulations will range from 7 to 9 inches, with amounts greater than 10 inches along and south of Highway 50. To the south, a mix of freezing rain and sleet with significant accumulations of ice is anticipated.

Travel is not recommended in southern Illinois or neighboring states due to the hazardous winter weather.

In central Illinois, snow accumulations will range from less than an inch near the Interstate 74 corridor to 2-5 inches between I-70 and a line from Shelbyville to Paris. The snow will taper off to flurries after midnight, but hazardous travel conditions will remain in east central and southeast Illinois into Wednesday morning.
