[July 01, 2009]  (AP)  Unsettled weather and below-average temperatures were expected to continue Wednesday over the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were to continue, with heavier rain from eastern New York into western New England. Stronger storms were capable of producing large hail and wind gusts later in the day.

In the central U.S., thunderstorms were expected by the afternoon over the northern high Plains, with some becoming severe.

To the South, hot and humid conditions were to continue, with rain and scattered thunderstorms going across the Florida peninsula. Showers and storms in central Texas would continue through the day.

In the West, scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms from the central Rockies into the Southwest were predicted. More clouds and fog and cooler temperatures were on tap for the California coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Meacham, Ore., to a high of 121 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
